Calhoun History The area on which Calhoun exists today originally belonged to the Cherokee Native Americans. The Cherokees were forced to move to Oklahoma by the U.S. Army. The land was then claimed by Georgia and became Gordon County. A small town, Dawsonville, was established in Gordon County. It was later renamed after Senator John C. Calhoun. Calhoun was incorporated in January, 1852.
